Woman, 38, screamed 'my leg, my leg' after being hit by stray bullet in Stamford Hill 'drive

The unintended target of a 'drive-by shooting' between 'rival gangs' could be heard screaming 'my leg, my leg' as she slumped to the pavement after being hit by a stray bullet, shocked onlookers have revealed.

CCTV obtained by MailOnline shows the 38-year-old victim collapsed at the side of the road after being shot in the leg yesterday evening in Stamford Hill, north London. 

The shocking incident happened at around 7.40pm as families with young children walked along Reizel Close, however CCTV shows it was 6.40pm due to the system not updating when the clocks went forward.

Footage reveals how occupants of two cars - one of which appears to not have a number plate - shot at each other while stuck in traffic on the busy street, before speeding off.

The woman was walking along the road with two others when she fell down, with shocked bystanders running to her aid. She was rushed to a major trauma centre in east London where her injuries were assessed as non-life threatening.

Giving an update on Wednesday afternoon, the Met Police said there was no indication that the shooting was 'hate related' and it is 'not directly connected with our Jewish communities or international events'.

There have been no arrests and the gunman remains at large.

Shocked witnesses told how the victim 'just crumpled to the floor' after the 'extremely concerning' incident.

A mother, who lives in the area and does not wish to be named, said her son saw 'the woman crumple to the floor and screaming 'my leg, my leg'' after being shot.

'He came in and his face was just white.' she said. 'I heard two deafening gunshots echo around the street a few seconds apart.

'At first, I thought they were fireworks, but it was the loudest noise I've heard in a long time. I saw everyone running into shops and cowering behind walls for safe.'

Police were still present at the scene of the attack on Wednesday, with a large cordon in place. Three green paramedic bags were still on the pavement near to where the woman had been treated.

There was also a line of six forensic officers crawling along the pavement on their knees searching for clues, such as bullet casings.

Officers confirmed the victim was not the intended target. 

A witness, who does not want to be named for fear of reprisals, told MailOnline: 'You could see that she bent down and then she is lying on the floor.

'The two people in front of her did not know what to do they were going back and forth. It happened very quickly,' they said.

A neighbour from a residential block overlooking Reizel Close said his wife heard 'two cracks' as horror incident unfolded.

The 52-year-old said: 'My wife heard two cracks and thought at first it was fireworks. Then we found out a woman had been shot, which is shocking because we had a daughter out at the time.'

Another witness Sayed Popal, 29, heard two bangs when he was bringing in the fruit and vegetables at his nearby corner shop before shutting up.

He said: I heard two shots then I saw a woman on the ground and people shouting and trying to help her. There was a big group.

'She looked in a bad way her head was on the pavement. The police and ambulance arrived very quickly.'

Emergency services arrived around four minutes after the victim hit the ground, according to footage.

Armed police descended on the neighbourhood last night to hunt for the gunman, who still remains at large.

Emergency crews including the air ambulance scrambled to join officers at the scene last night as she was rushed to hospital.

Last night, a source at the scene told MailOnline two cars were aiming guns at each other at the time of the shooting.

While witnesses describe hearing 'two loud bangs', it has not been confirmed how many shots were fired or whether they came from two cars or just one.

The witness added that one of the cars sped off in the direction of Clapton Common, a park half a mile away from the scene, where two more shots were reportedly heard.

Social media videos showed dozens of onlookers watching as the authorities descended onto the scene last night.

One woman on the scene, whose flat overlooks the police cordon, says she was told 'go back inside' last night - amid fears the shooters could return.

The local, who did not want to be named, said: 'I heard a lot of noise last night so I came out into my front garden.

'But the police told me to go back inside in case the shooter or shooters were still around.

'I usually feel safe around here so I'm quite shocked. But I guess you just don't know what will happen anymore.

Another local resident said he'd heard the shooting had happened as a result of a 'fight'. I heard it was a fight - that there was some bad blood going on,' he said.

Officers had closed off Stamford Hill in both directions between Clapton Common and Manor Road 

On Wednesday afternoon, Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, local policing lead for Hackney and Tower Hamlets, said: 'This was an extremely concerning incident for our communities and illustrates just how indiscriminate the danger of gun crime can be.

'I urge anyone with information about this incident to contact my local officers or our colleagues in Specialist Crime who are leading the investigation.

'This incident created additional concern, given the proximity to our large Jewish community in the Stamford Hill area.

'I can confirm that there is no indication that this offence was hate related and it was not directly connected with our Jewish communities or international events. 

'This offence shows the dreadful impact of gun crime across all of our communities.

'My local policing teams will continue to be out in the community, so please do approach officers if you have specific concerns or information.'

Detective Inspector Dave Hickford of the Met's Specialist Crime Command continued: 'We are working hard to establish the full circumstance surrounding this incident and following initial enquiries we do not believe that the victim was the intended target.

'I urge anyone with information to get in touch without delay, help us take dangerous criminals off your streets.'
